Effectively Treating Anxiety and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

December 10 Breakfast 8:30am-8:45am   Training 8:45am-4:00pm $159, 6 CEUs Presenter: Susan Osofsky, MSW, LCSW Doubletree Hilton Hotel, 1726 Reisterstown Road Baltimore, MD 21208 United States + Google Map

Treatment of Anxiety and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can be a challenge for therapists: not only does talk therapy generally not work to alleviate anxiety or reduce ritualized repetitive behavior, but it can even increase these symptoms.  In this presentation, you will learn Exposure/Response Prevention (Ex/RP), a model that’s been proven to be very effective.  We’ll explore brain mechanisms and chemicals behind anxiety and OCD, discuss the differences and connections between obsessions and compulsions, and demonstrate how to assess the severity of a case.  You will learn cognitive strategies to help clients lessen distorted thinking and manage anxiety symptoms.  You will also learn how to lead your clients through the process of exposure using Ex/RP in a way that allows them to endure the momentary anxiety of not doing ritual repetitive behavior to reduce discomfort and, when catastrophe doesn’t result, help them to restructure their thinking and begin to free themselves of their symptoms.
