(NEW) – Ethical Guidelines to Using Art in Therapy

This engaging didactic and experiential workshop will focus on the ethical and appropriate use of art interventions in mental health practices by clinicians outside the expressive arts professions. An overview of Art Therapy theory including art stages of development, art product and process, the hierarchy and use of art media will be discussed, interwoven with art experientials for each stage of art development. We will explore the spectrum of art materials from pencil to clay and paint by trying out media through directive and non directive means. Art experientials will include Winnicott’s Squiggle story, clay sculpture, watercolor meditation mandalas (Bliss Ball!) and a joint creative transformation art directive. Stages of art development is an essential foundation of using art to develop an understanding of universal and normal baselines for each age. Cultural factors will be considered.

At least 21 ethical points developed by the presenter, a Licensed, Registered and Board Certified art therapist relating to the use of art will be reviewed. Educational requirements— for a Master’s degree in Art Therapy, Maryland law regarding the use of Art Therapy as well as the American Art Therapy Associations guidelines will be reviewed. This will be a fun and creative way to learn ethical guidelines of integrating art into clinical work!
