This six-hour trauma-sensitive webinar will address the ethical challenges and strengths of utilizing art-making and other expressive interventions in tele-mental health therapies. The day will begin with a group discussion of different HIPAA compliant telehealth platforms such as Zoom, Doxy and Simple Practice to learn from each other regarding successful expressive arts experiences and resources.
Technology can cause disruptions and dilemmas interfering with therapy but can also invite effective creative opportunities. How do we observe the art-making process on live camera? What “found” materials in the home can be used creatively? Ethical considerations specific to the art process and art product on video platforms will be addressed. How do we keep artwork and verbal processing confidential especially when done at home by minors? Can client do art between sessions and share in session? General ethical guidelines of using art in therapy by non-art therapist mental health practitioners will be woven into these discussions such as developmental stages of art, the role of the therapist during art-making and how to process the art with the client appropriately. Time will be provided for trauma-focused expressive art experientials throughout the day, integrating the impact of this pandemic on both our clients and ourselves. Specific attention will be on the collective trauma and personal experiences of diverse losses. This workshop will be supportive, creative and engaging while providing practical solutions and ethics credits!
