There is more understanding today of postpartum depression (PPD) and other mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) as a serious mental health concern for women.
In this workshop we will explore the importance of understanding what differences there may be when a trauma survivor has a baby versus a woman without a prior trauma history. For woman with a prior trauma history, there is a need to become more proactive with the care prior to or during pregnancy. We will address the very real issue of women terrified to admit they’re in crisis and hiding their struggle with overwhelming anxiety, worry, depression and shame.
As we pay attention to the symptoms instead of just the narrative, participants will gain a deeper understanding of why perinatal mental health issues can be a re-enactment of traumatic experiences for some women. Participants will come away from this training empowered with a trauma-informed approach necessary to maternal mental health, thus giving women the effective and healing support they need. We will also address the unique issues that have arisen for mothers who are pregnant and deliver babies during the Pandemic.
