From a view point of post traumatic growth, reconnecting a survivor of trauma with the “felt sense” of their body is one of the most important and challenging tasks of therapy. This task is especially difficult because trauma is stored in the body, and essential because true healing and joy can occur only when we are deeply connected to our felt sense of self, when we are Embodied. We’ll begin this workshop by taking a look at the science and theory of Embodiment, the therapeutic benefits and challenges of Embodiment Work and the relationship between Embodiment Work and Parts Work. Embodiment activities that include breath work, Sheng Zhen moving meditation practices, and reintegration/releasing techniques will be explored. Next, we’ll identify 9 stages of Embodiment and engage in active learning experiences that provide participants with an opportunity to practice creative and body-based tools to apply at each stage. By the end of this workshop participants will have learned a variety of ways to safely and gently invite clients back into their body.
It’s important to note that while many trauma survivors experience significant disconnection from felt sense (their survival may have depended on this), many of us who haven’t experienced trauma are also, to some degree, disconnected from felt sense due to familial/cultural beliefs and training. This workshop invites us to open our hearts as well as our bodies to better understand the felt experience of our clients. In this shared experience we can be more fully present to the endless possibilities for healing, led by our deepest wisdom.
Define Top Down and Bottom Up (embodied) Process including how these differ and what role each plays in the successful trauma treatment.
Explain the science behind embodied awareness including Poly Vagal theory, interoceptive awareness, cellular trauma, self-regulation, resonance, implicit knowing, flow, ipseity and authentic presence.
Identify treatment modalities and therapeutic practices that incorporate bottom up embodiment techniques including
Eastern Medicine modalities utilizing “Qi” for healing.
Differentiate between therapeutic and non-therapeutic embodiment interventions and the role that each can play in healing trauma.
Identify and problem solve for the challenges of incorporating bottom up, embodied, process in trauma treatment and Parts work.
Describe the 9 Stages of Embodiment in trauma treatment.
