How do we best facilitate deep healing for clients with trauma and honor their stories in sand scenes? Case examples will show the integration of metaphor, symbols, and narrative including three strategies to help clients externalize trauma and reclaim healing parts.

The experiential component for this workshop includes creation of sand scenes, practice resonating with symbols, and heighten awareness of voices in the sand. With an emphasis on safety, participants will witness and honor verbal and non-verbal representations of trauma.

Learning Objectives

  1. Explain how sand scenes can help therapists and clients understand inner narrative as developmental moments constructed to self-protect at the time of trauma
  2. Demonstrate three strategies using sand and symbols to help clients externalize, contain, and process their trauma.
  3. Practice three ways to engage and validate internal parts related to trauma represented in client narratives and sand scenes.

Agenda

Afternoon:
  • Participant create sand scenes representing client traumas
  • Demonstration of ways to validate and facilitate externalization of inner narrative
