Heather M. Garner is a licensed certified social worker-clinical, therapist, and owner of Garnering Change Psychotherapy. Since launching Garnering Change in 2011, Heather has become well known for her broad range of expertise in couples counseling and working with sexual minorities. Her specialties include anxiety disorders, ADHD, grief, trauma, and working with couples in non-traditional relationships.
Prior to launching Garnering Change, Heather provided community-based crisis mental health services at Catholic Charities, provided inpatient and emergency psychiatric services with MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, and served in outpatient therapy roles with Johns Hopkins Bayview Child and Adolescent Outpatient Psychiatry.
Over the course of her career, Heather’s mission has stayed the same: Guide clients along a collaborative journey of self-discovery and healing through this shared experience we call life. Regardless of age, worldview, or upbringing, Heather is a dedicated partner to many who rely on her knowledge and experience to help them overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles and challenges. Since starting Garnering Change almost decade ago, Heather has watched it become an important resource for those within the Baltimore community and beyond and is so grateful for the opportunity to serve those in need.
Heather holds a master’s degree in social work from the University of Maryland’s School of Social Work and bachelor’s degree in social work from University of Maryland, Baltimore County. She is certified in Relational Life Therapy (RLT) and has completed Level 2 Training in the Gottman Method Couples Therapy. Heather currently serves as a board approved supervisor for the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners, is an active member of the National Association of Social Workers, and is a Grief Recovery Specialist© with The Grief Recovery Institute©.
