Workshop Description:
This highly experiential master workshop will provide a foundational overview of the integration of art therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). The integration of art therapy into these complementary therapeutic approaches will be explored, demonstrating how expressive arts can enhance and support the efficacy of these models for complex trauma across the lifespan. Herman’s tri-phase model of trauma treatment including establishing safety and stabilization, trauma processing and grieving, and rehabilitation and community will inform the structure of the day.
Integrating expressive arts with EMDR and/or IFS is a pioneering field with evolving publications and trainings. Both presenters are licensed art therapists trained in advanced IFS and EMDR and have published on this integration of IFS, EMDR and Art Therapy. Trauma therapists are driven to seek effective approaches that can shorten the duration of treatment while increasing client’s ability to manage the process. We will highlight throughout the day how IFS, EMDR, and art therapy interweave into clinical work.
Learning methods include theoretical underpinnings through PowerPoint lecture, case examples, and multiple art experientials followed by group discussion. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in several art directives specific to the phases of EMDR and IFS as we move through the tri-phase trauma model. Art experientials and examples will be used to enhance EMDR phases and to understand the bilateral principles of EMDR through somatic drawing; IFS concepts of the 6 F’s will be explored through clay-making and creating containers.
This workshop provides an overview of Creative Arts Therapies, IFS and EMDR and participants may have experience in one, two or all. The goal of this training is to provide understanding and basic information with a few take away tools. Prior knowledge of EMDR, IFS and/or expressive arts are not required to benefit from this workshop as learned creative skills can be integrated into diverse clinical practices. For participants trained in EMDR and/or IFS, this workshop will increase clinical proficiency.
Learning Objectives:
1. Define 5 ways Art Therapy offers clinical benefits to trauma treatment.
2. Define 3 or more basic principles of the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model of treatment that can be applied to clinicians’ current therapeutic approaches.
3. Identify the 8 phases of EMDR.
4. Give three examples of how art therapy principles overlap with IFS and EMDR.
5. Explain 3 or more ways that IFS, EMDR, and art therapy theory overlap and complement and each other to promote transformation for clients in both individual and group settings.
6. Describe 4 EMDR and IFS-informed art interventions used to identify parts and their relationship to each other, fostering unblending, enhancing internal dialogue and increasing self-compassion in both the clinician and the client.
