Workshop Description:

Stories are the way life is framed; giving it meaning and purpose. When we are young, they act as sanctuaries. But when we get older, stories can act as blueprints; giving us roadmaps to better places, people and things. In this seminar, we will explore the use of vision boards as a way of helping clients move from simply surviving to deliberately thriving. Often times, it’s the narrative that makes the difference between one person developing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and another facilitating Post Traumatic Growth. Indeed, if stories are the way we interpret and integrate our experiences, then learning how to become skilled and empowered storytellers is essential.

Using the principles of narrative therapy, the hero’s journey, self-actualization, language and visualization, participants will learn how to create vision boards that can act as scripts for a new life story. Here, participants can learn how to invite clients to treat their power as a more reliable narrator than their pain. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a vision board can be what transforms those words into an epic story waiting to be told. Using simple elements like magazine pictures, motivational quotes, scriptures, song lyrics or lines from favorite movies, vision boards can be an organizing tool that transforms an inspired idea into an actualized individual or an accomplished vision. Because as they say in the theater, “if it ain’t on the page, it ain’t on the stage.”

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe how to create an organizing principle for a vision board.

2. Identify how to help clients select elements for their boards (from sources they already trust).

3. Describe how to use a vision board to create a life (or story) clients actually want to live.

4. Define the process of moving from the grievance story to the gratitude story to the great gain story.

5. Identify the three types of people a person can become in their story.

6. Define the two types of stories a person’s life can become.

7. Explain the power of identity in directing a story.

8. Integrate the use vision boards with other tools to strengthen focus and change habits.
